Komodo National Park

Komodo National Park Lying about some 500 kilometers to the east of Bali, Komodo National Park (KNP) nestles between the islands of Sumbawa and Flores, all of which are part of Indonesia’s Lesser Sunda Islands (Nusa Tenggara on current maps). The area on Komodo National Park has received a status as protected areas since 1915 when Sultan of Bima, a sultanate on neighboring island Sumbawa, conferred the area as nature reserve. In 1928 the colonial government Dutch East Indies formalized the nature reserve status. In 1928 the Dutch colonial government of the then Dutch East Indies formalized the nature reserve status originally conferred on Komodo in 1915 by the Raja of Bima in neighboring Sumbawa. Indonesian Government declared the area as national park in 1980, and in 1992 Komodo National Park was declared a World Heritage Site. The park encompasses 1.817 square kilometers of land and marine wildlife, including Main Island such as Komodo, Rinca, Padar and Gili Motang plus numerous smaller islands. The most famous of the unique species on Komodo National Park is the Komodo Dragon (Varanus komodoensis), the world’s largest lizard. Komodo Dragon is called Ora in local language. It is the world’s largest lizard. The largest komodo weight reached up to 165.9 kg (365 pounds) with measuring up to 3 meters long. There are more or less 2500-3000 Komodo dragons on the island of Rinca and Komodo. Besides such biggest carnivore, Komodo National park also home for Timor deer, long-tailed macaque, wild board, water buffalo, feral horse, and number of bird such as Orange-footed Scrub fowl, Green Jungle fowl, Yellow-bellied White-eye, Island Collared Dove, Black-napped Tern, Beach Thick Knee, Great-billed Heron and Yellow-crested Cockatoo. Especially for Yellow-crested Cockatoo, this bird can only be seen on Komodo Island. Komodo National Park is also rich on its marine life. There are more than 1,000 species of fish, 385 species of reef-building corals, 70 species sponges, 10 dolphin species, 6 whale species, green and hawks-billed turtle, dugong, and various species of sharks and rays, including manta ray.

   3 Days/2 Nights Exploration

ITINERARY
Day 1: Labuan Bajo – Rinca. Arrival at Komodo Airport in Labuan Bajo west Flores, meeting service with our representative and transfer to the harbor, aboard a boat that will take you to Rinca Island. Lunch on board, about 2 ½ hours sail to the land of Komodo Dragon, start your trekking, walking through the typical dry forest to explore the Island of Rinca, you will find not just the Dragons but also a number wild animals like, deer, wild buffalo, long-tailed macaque and wild boar and also numerous of birds. The one you should try to see is Orange-footed Scrub fowl, a bird in size bit smaller than chicken. This bird makes nest on the ground for incubating its eggs and often used by a female Komodo to lay eggs too. A local ranger will lead you to explore this unique wildlife. Dinner and overnight on board. (LD) Day 2: Rinca-Komodo Island-Pink Beach-Taka Makassar-Labuan Bajo Your breakfast will be served on board. While enjoying your breakfast, you will be sailing to Loh Liang – the Ranger station on Komodo Island. This trip will take about 2.5 hours. On Komodo Island you will do soft trekking inland.  Hopefully to see more the Komodo. More birds can be seen on Komodo Island such as Orange-footed Scrub fowl, Green Jungle fowl, Yellow-bellied White-eye, Island Collared Dove, Black-napped Tern, Beach Thick Knee, Great-billed Heron and Yellow-crested Cockatoo.  Yellow-crested Cockatoo can be seen only on Komodo Island. Back to the boat, continue to Pink Beach for swimming and snorkeling. This is one of the best places for snorkeling in Komodo National Park. Enjoy unspoiled coral reefs and colorful fishes. From Pink Beach sail toward Taka Makassar to try finding Huge Mantas by snorkeling or watching from your boat trip. Lunch will be provided on board.  Late in the afternoon back to Labuan Bajo harbor and transfer to hotel for overnight. (BLD) Day 3:  Labuan Bajo-Next Destinations Depending on your flight schedule,  after breakfast,  visit to the Batu Cermin cave before taking you to the airport for flight to Denpasar or going to the next destinations (BL)…

   4 Days/3 Nights Exploration

ITINERARY
Day 1 : Labuan Bajo-Kelor-Flying Fox Arrive in Labuan Bajo, transfer to the harbor and go on board a traditional wooden boat powered by sail and engine, you will sail to Kelor Island about 45 minute from Labuan Bajo Harbour. Here you will enjoy swimming and snorkeling. Return to your boat and head to Flying Fox Island, a small mangrove island inhabited by thousands of flying foxes. At dusk these mammals leave the nest and fly to Flores mainland searching for food. The next day at dawn they fly back to the island to have like day rest before doing the same again at dusk.  Boat anchors not far from the island. Stay for overnight on board. (LD) Note: If time allows, you can visit Rinca Village not far from Kelor Island. This is very interesting to see how human can live so close with the biggest predator on the island. Day 2: Flying Fox Island-Rinca-Komodo Island-Pink Beach-Gili Laba At 05:30 you slowly move to Rinca Island while breakfast is served accordingly. On Rinca you will do trekking along the path on the island. With luck you might see several Komodo dragons on their activities, water buffalo, Timor deer, long-tailed macaque and a number of birds. The one you should try to see is Orange-footed Scrubfowl, a bird in size bit smaller than chicken. This bird makes nest on the ground for incubating its egg. A female Komodo often uses this nest to lay eggs too. Return to the boat and continue to Komodo Island for another 2.5 hours sailing. Here you will have opportunity to do soft trekking. Hopefully to see the Komodo too. More birds can be seen on Komodo Island such as Orange-footed Scrub fowl, Green Jungle fowl, Yellow-bellied White-eye, Island Collared Dove, Black-napped Tern, Beach Thick Knee, Great-billed Heron and Yellow-crested Cockatoo. Especially for Yellow-crested Cockatoo, this bird can only be seen on Komodo Island. Back to the boat, continue to Pink Beach for swimming and snorkeling. This is one of the best places for snorkeling in Komodo National Park. You will leave Pantai Merah and head to Gili Laba, a small island on the northern side of Komodo Island. There is a small hill about 300 m high. If time allows you can climb this hill and from top you will see a spectacular view to its surrounding area. Although coral reef here is not as good as on Pantai Merah but swimming is possible after climbing the hill. (BLD) Day 3: Gili Laba-Taka Makassar-Mesa Fishing Village-Labuan Bajo Boat slowly moving while you are having your breakfast. This morning you will try find  location called Taka Makassar to see manta. From Taka Makassar proceed to Mesa village. Houses in this village are built on stilt about 1.5-2 meters above the water. Originally fishermen here are sea nomad called Bajau who settled permanently. Continue to swimming and snorkeling sites before heading to Labuan Bajo to stay for overnight at hotel. (BLD) Day 4: Labuan Bajo – Denpasar

Transfer to the airport after breakfast. Fly to Denpasar for 1.5 hours. Arrive in Denpasar, journey ends or continue to the next journey…. (B)
